Notes 3/27/08 The Literature of the Reconstruction to The New Negro Renaissance (1865-1919) Booker Taliafero Washington (1856-1915) Born in Franklin County, Virginia Never knew his birthday/father Attended night schools after working Faculty member of Hampton school His writing style: One of story telling No personal emotions (only mild comments- ex. “The system”) Very little self-reference (when he does, it is important) Used ghost writers Very popular person, initially with both blacks and whites of the south, but not so, especially with African American Intellectuals Up From Slavery – 1901 1. System of Slavery Buy/sale of slaves: “…addition to the slave family attracted about as much attention as the purchase of a new horse or cow Children of white fathers Freedom day and what next Learning how to read/write His feelings: “…ceased to cherish the Southern white people on account of the enslavement of my race.”
