U.S History Research Project Graded Assignment 01/26/10 Andrew DeGregorio The Start of Freedom The American Revolution was a result of years of tensions between Great Britain and the thirteen American Colonies. Great Britain was ruling over the Colonies, the King was being unreasonable and taking advantage of them. What they were doing was unfair to the colonists and they decided to fight back. Years of rebelling would occur in a successful attempt for independence from Great Britain. The French and Indian war had ended and Great Britain had a great deal of war debt. The King felt that the colonies should be responsible for that debt since the war occurred on American soil. To make the colonist pay the debt he imposed an abundance of taxes on all imports, known as The Stamp Act of 1765. Colonists had to pay taxes on paper, sugar, tea, wool and more. They had no other choice because they only had trade with Britain. They became angry and The Town Shed acts broke out. This lead to the Boston Massacre in 1770, the British soldiers couldn’t handle the harassment anymore so they shot into a defenseless crowd of colonists, one night. To fight back was a secret organization called “The Sons of Liberty”. They held protests like Boston Tea Party, a famous event in history where men dumped tea barrels into Boston Harbor. Great Britain
did not tolerate this and soon they passed the The Coercive acts in 1774. This shut down
