PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF A DRILLING FLUID Stabilizing the wellbore o To achieve hole stability, the mud cake, the mud density, the flow properties, and the chemical activity of the mud may have to be adjusted and special coating material added to the drilling fluid Controlling formation pressures o The drilling fluid density should be adequate to contain any formation pressures encountered to prevent the influx of formation fluids into the wellbore and provide a safety margin while tripping pipe. o It must not be so high as to create excessive differential pressures, which will slow drilling rate and may also cause lost circulation and differential sticking. Transmitting hydraulic horsepower to the bit o The drilling fluid is the medium through which hydraulic horsepower is transmitted to the bit. o The viscoelastic drilling fluid will minimize the friction losses and maximize the available hydraulic horsepower at the bit.
