2 Prof. Ren 3 Security of DES- Length of key With a key length of 56 bits, there are 2 56 possible keys, which is approximately 7.2 10 16 keys. In 1998, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) built the special- purpose “DES Cracker” for less than $250,000. This machine had broken a DES encryption in less than three (3) days by exhaustively search the entire key space. DES was finally and definitively proved to be insure. Prof. Ren 4 Security of DES- S-boxes One of the concern is that the design criteria for the S-boxes, and indeed for the entire algorithm, were not made public. There is a suspicion that the boxes were constructed in such a way that cryptanalysis is possible for an opponent who knows the weaknesses in the S- boxes. However, so far, no one has succeeded in discovering the supposed fatal weaknesses in the S-boxes.
