1 Prof. Ren 1 Block Cipher Encryption Modes Lecture 7 Prof. Ren 2 Electronic Codebook (ECB) Mode Simplest mode Plaintext is handled 64 bits at a time Each block is encrypted using the same key For a given key, there is a unique ciphertext for every 64-bit block of plaintext Each block of 64 plaintext bits is encoded independently using the same key Used in secure transmission of short amount of data such as an encryption keys

3 Prof. Ren 5 Properties of ECB Simple and efficient: Each block of 64 plaintext bits is encoded independently using the same key. Parallel implementation possible The disadvantage of ECB: does not conceal plaintext patterns When we encrypt the same plaintext, we will get the same ciphertext. Therefore, the attackers can analyze the ciphertext (traffic analysis). Prof. Ren 6 Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) Mode To overcome the security deficiency of ECB, we would like that even if the same plaintext block is repeated, different ciphertext block will be
