Won 1872 election to the house of representatives. .Became a congressmen. People tried to destroy him. Carl Schurz : Union general (later leader of republican party) foreseen troubles rapier would encounter … Believed whites would introduce a new labor system (forced) similar to slavery (supported Rapier) Said end of war didn’t mean peace getting black rights wasn’t going to be easy. (16 th pres.) Abe Lincoln(--1865) - his war time reconstruction began before the period of reconstruction. During reconstruction, he wanted speedy national unity….Congress wanted white loyalty though. He didn’t pay attention to land or labor problems though. He died 4 days after he said that the nation’s wounds must be binded. People believed his plan would restore southern ruling power and greater power for blacks. (new birth of freedom)
