particles. One must establish whether the particle motion truly simulates the fluid motion. Floats are commonly used to track the movement of ocean waters and can be designed to move at the surface, along the bottom, or at any given depth . Many official tidal-current charts  were obtained by releasing and timing a floating spar
attached to a length of string. One can release whole groups of spars to determine a
flow pattern. | v v Rotating sensors. The rotating devices of Fig. 6.29a to d can be used in either gases
or liquids, and their rotation rate is approximately proportional to the flow velocity.
The cup anemometer (Fig. 6.29a) and Savonius rotor (Fig. 6.29b) always rotate the
same way, regardless of flow direction. They are popular in atmospheric and oceanographic applications and can be fitted with a direction vane to align themselves with
