Floats are commonly used to track the movement of ocean waters and can be designed to move at the surface, along the bottom, or at any given depth [24]. Many official tidal-current charts [25] were obtained by releasing and timing a floating spar attached to a length of string. The rotating devices of Fig. 6.29a to d can be used in either gases or liquids, and their rotation rate is approximately proportional to the flow velocity.
