Unformatted text preview: Louis XV (1715 to 1774) was the king of France who led the French into the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. He was a very poor ruler. Louis XVI (1754 to 1793) was King of France. Loved by the people at first, his indecisiveness and conservatism led the people to reject and hate him. Along with his wife, Marie Antoinette, he was executed during the French Revolution. Robert Walpole (1676 to 1745) was a British statesman who became the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. Walpole, a Whig, served during the reigns of George I and George II. Catherine II of Russia (1729 to 1796) , known as Catherine the Great, was the empress of Russia after the death of her husband, Peter III. As a cultured ruler in a backwards country, Catherine appeared to be enlightened. She talked with many of the Philosophes, and raised her son to be one as well. She is also known for her affairs with members of her government. Frederick William I (1688 to 1740) was the king of Prussia and the son and successor of Frederick I. He strengthened the military and the bureaucracy, creating a huge military and the General Directory. Despite establishing a huge military, he never used it.
