Detention facilities handle criminals who have been arrested and are awaiting trial, while correctional facilities are for convicted offenders to serve out their prison sentences. What is parole? Who makes the decisions about parole? Parole is the conditional release of an offender after they have served some of their time. The parole board makes decisions about parole. Describe a typical inmate in a prison in the United States. The typical inmate in prison in the United States is male, from a minority group, is a drug addict or mentally ill, poor and probably had a difficult/abusive upbringing or comes from a dysfunctional family background. What are the benefits of the probation system? The state doesn't have to financially support the offender. Also, it helps keep jails and prisons from becoming overcrowded. Finally, it helps give the offenders a second chance at participating normally in society just with rules and regulations.
