The typical inmate in prison in the United States is male, from a minority group, is a drug addict or
mentally ill, poor and probably had a difficult/abusive upbringing or comes from a dysfunctional family
background.
What are the benefits of the probation system?
The state doesn't have to financially support the offender. Also, it helps keep jails and prisons from
becoming overcrowded. Finally, it helps give the offenders a second chance at participating normally in
society just with rules and regulations.
