Upon what sources did Columbus draw in naming the islands he encountered? For the first couple islands that Columbus discovered he drew his sources from religious references. He named the first island after Jesus Christ because he felt that it was because of Him that he was able to reach the so-called New World (the island was originally called Guanahany by the natives, but Columbus just ditched that name). The document states, “To the first of these I gave the name of the blessed Saviour, on whose aid relying I had reached this as well as the other island.” The next island he encountered, he ordered it to be called Santa Maria of the Conception, which I assume is named after Saint Mary. Columbus named the next few islands: Fernandina (in honor of King Ferdinand II of Aragon), Isabella (in honor of Queen Isabella I of Castile), and Juana (in honor of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella’s daughter).
