Study Questions for Aeschylus, Libation Bearers 1. Is it right for Orestes to kill his mother? It is right in the sense that he is getting revenge for the evil murder against his father/ a. How does the play tell us it is right? The play says it is right in saying the people of Argos will be free once it is done. The god Apollo (“great oracle Apollo will never betray me”-269) granted him permission to do so in order to restore order in the house. The gods being on his side tells us it is right. Justice tells us it is right. “Justice kill the killers” (144). “Power, Justice, and Zues….stand by your side” (244). The snake dream…as the prophecy. (p.91-92) b. How does the play tell us it is wrong? The play does not give too many examples but it tells us it is wrong through Clytemnestra “You should fear the curse of your kin” (106) if he does kill her. When she questions if her has feelings (896) at all and he then questions how he could ever kill his mother…it’s unnatural. And then
