9/7/2009 Review questions for Bio 1A Lectures 4-5 Which of the following is a building block of RNA? Which is a building block of DNA? Which molecule are you likely to find more of in the cytoplasm? The nucleus? You spend several days isolating prokaryotic ribosomes in one test tube, and eukaryotic ribosomes in another test tube. Unfortunately, you forget to label the test tubes. Important aside: Always label your sample clearly. Clear labeling can save you from hours or days of repeating experiments . Rather than go to the effort of culturing cells and isolating ribosomes again, what experiment can you do to tell what kind of ribosomes are in each test tube? What format will the data/results be in? [note for this question: focus on the experiment, and what it tells you about the properties of ribosomes. Don’t waste time memorizing numbers]. What’s the difference between bound and unbound ribosomes? Are there any chemical differences between the ribosome particles themselves? Put the following even of protein trafficking in order from first to last.
