From: Student Subject: Assignment #2 – Fact Finding: Contacting Human Resource Departments Report Due: March 14, 2007 Introduction This fact-find mission revealed useful information regarding the availability of jobs in the field of Civil Engineering, but most importantly it was great real-world practice for cold-calling human resources departments. I chose to contact companies whom I approached at the career fair, and have submitted internship applications. I have high regard for all of these companies, will consider applying to each during my Senior year. Example Entry Level Positions Job Title: Civil Engineer Job Description: We currently have opportunities within our company for Civil Engineers. Assignments are in conjunction with engineering, procurement, planning, designing, and construction of: • Bridges • Dams • Highways • Military Bases (Core of Engineers, Federal Government) • Transportation • Tunnels • Water and wastewater facilities • Hazardous waste facilities • Power plants • Telecommunication systems • Commercial and industrial facilities • Hydro-electric power Job duties will also include preparing and performing site selection studies, field investigations, environmental impact studies and environmental monitoring. Master of Science degrees include work in the areas of: • Geotechnical • Soil Mechanics • Structural • Foundations • Hydraulics Opportunities for field assignments involving startup, initial operation, inspection, quality control, and construction management services are available. To qualify, you must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75/4.0, excellent communication skills, willingness to travel, proficient computer skills, and related summer or co-op experience.
