Brewster McCann Hilary Jacobs Sofia Soorenko Chapter 36: Examples of Major Themes in AP Biology Science as a Process – Science is a way of knowing. It can involve a discovery process using inductive reasoning, or it can be a process of hypothesis testing. Example: Research has shown that the density of stomata per unit area of leaf tissue has decreased over the past two-hundred years. This was one of the first examples of changes in plant structure caused by the need to adapt to the increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Evolution – Evolution is the biological change of organisms that occurs over time and is driven by the process of natural selection. Evolution accounts for the diversity of life on Earth. Example: Plants found in arid climates would frequently die during especially dry seasons due to water loss. Luckily, plants have developed a waxy covering called a cuticle which acts as a lock that keeps water in the plant body from being lost to the air, or evaporated. Energy Transfer – Energy is the capacity to do work. All living organisms are active because of
