Jan06 Drayton ECE 5613 RF/Microwave Circuit Design Laboratory Resonators Lab RECOMMENDATION : Try to complete the design portion and generate the layout before trying to completely answer the associated questions. Application : Resonators can be used in a variety of applications from filters, oscillators, frequency meters, or tuned amplifiers. They can also be used to help in the determination of high frequency material properties. Purpose : We will study microstrip resonators. The objective is to determine the Q of the design as well as to explore direct and indirect coupling methods. A. Microstrip Resonator All measurements require a 1-Port Calibration on the network analyzer across the entire bandwidth of the system. Design and modeling will be done using Hewlett Packard – ADS 2002 and LineCalc. 1. Design an open-circuit microstrip resonator at 2 GHz on FR4 pc-board material. Assume thickness of 62.5 mils, relative dielectric constant of 4.78, tan δ of 0.015 and 1 oz copper (thickness of 1.04 mils).
