Rachlin1 Jeremy Rachlin Mr. Harvie Honors American History November 8, 2018 The Battle of Spotsylvania The Battle of Spotsylvania was one of the worst battles of the Civil War. The battle lasted for the longer part of 2 weeks and was one of the bloodiest battles. Out of hundred thousand soldiers that fought in the battle, the Union , like most of the other battles , had hundreds of more soldiers, yet the battle still ended as a draw. Although the odds were stacked against the Confederacy , how did the battle still end inconclusive ly ? From May 8th to the 21st of 1864 the Civil War was still being battled and that week was recorded one of the biggest and most bloodiest battles of the War. The battle began on May 8th after the battle in the Wilderness had ended on May 7th. The battle started when Union General Ulysses S. Grant sent an order to attempt to get in between Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army. The only thing standing between General Grant and the Spotsylvania court house was a Confederate general by the name of General J.E.B. Stuart. A portion of General Stuart’s army was led by General Fitz Lee and was battling for 2 days over the control of Brock Road, which led straight to the courthouse. Grant’s army continued to push forward to a point where General Lee fell back to a raised area called Laurel Hill. Lee had been pushed back to Laurel Hill and
