SOC 220 January 25, 2020 Social Problem Final Essay Social problems occur when a group of dominant individuals identify a social condition as threatening its values, when the condition affects a large number of people, and when the condition can be remedied by collective action (Sullivan, 2016). There are many social problems that exist in America such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse, poverty, human trafficking, child abuse, and many inequalities. The child abuse rate is on the rise in the United States, so let’s look at the impact of social phenomenon, how it aligns with the theoretical perspective, and possible solutions. During this course I learned child abuse can be affected by social deviance, and vulnerable populations. On the micro level social deviance may perpetuate child abuse because it may be passed down from generation to generation as corporal punishment and become normal within families. On the macro level sometimes, mandated reporters known as doctors, nurses, social workers, teachers, and counselors do not advocate for abused children nor take the cases serious; leaving them in dangerous and harmful situations to continue to be abused. Social problems of vulnerable populations have also been affected by child abuse on the micro and macro levels. On a micro level an abused child is a contributing factor in the development of psychiatric disorders in their childhood and adulthood (Devi, Sharma, & Shekhar, 2015). Being abused as a child has a high risk for potential health problems within such as; survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, and trust or power (Devi, Sharma, & Shekhar, 2015).
