CLT 3370-03: Topics and Instructions for Paper #1 ( Due October 16 th ) Topic #1 : Greco-Roman Myth and the Book of Genesis Compare and contrast Greco-Roman myths pertaining to creation and the early history of mankind with the account offered in the Book of Genesis. Your discussion should offer comparative analysis of: 1) The Creation of the World according to Hesiod’s Theogony , Ovid’s Metamorphoses , and Genesis Chapter 1.1-31. 2) The Creation of Mortals (both men and women) according to Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Genesis Chapter 2.7-25. 3) The ‘Fall from Grace’ / Introduction of Evil according to Hesiod’s Works and Days (i.e. the ‘Ages of Mankind’), Hesiod’s Theogony (i.e. the story of Pandora), and Genesis Chapter 3.1-24. 4) The Flood (and rebirth of mankind) according to Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Genesis Chapters 6-9. Things to consider: In what ways are the stories similar? In what ways are they different? What roles do god / the gods play in these stories? How do the Greco-Roman gods differ from the god in Genesis ? How do mortals (men and women) appear in these stories? What is the nature of mankind’s relationship with the gods / god in these stories? How are women treated in these stories? What is the nature of mankind’s relationship to animals and/or the environment generally? Do the stories share more than similarities of narrative detail (i.e. tone, optimistic outlook [e.g. hope], pessimistic outlook [e.g.
