Italian Renaissance, as its name openly suggests, began in the Italian peninsula and spread through the Continent. First of all, the growth of cities was supplied by migration from the rural areas. Actually, the network of cities by then, were very reminiscent of the system of lordship in Britain; there was a city in the middle surrounded by a vast land with its rural villages and peasants working on agriculture to support the city- a replica of today’s large disgusting system of capitalistic world. The products were produced on the rural side and marketed in the city. By time, there occurred a hierarchy among the guilds- this became a world of supply and demand. After the collapse of the Great Roman Empire, city-states came to dominate the peninsula. The wars between these states were implied even by its name the city-states , each trying to gain a national identity, having its own rules and customs like the states in America (CW, p. 355). There was no unity in the case of a central authority. Being the centre of the Christian world, they led the wealth and power of Europe with its unique geographical position: Holy Roman Empire in the north, Africa in the south, the Continent in the west, and Byzantium and The Ottoman Empire, though not an empire then, in the east.
