Unformatted text preview: PURDUE UNIVERSITY RESIDENCES NEWSLETTER FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS IN THIS ISSUE www.housing.purdue.edu UNIVERSITY RESIDENCES Life is less bewildering than it might be for Purdue students living in residence halls especially freshmen thanks to the resident assistants (RAs) living on each floor. The RAs, who must be 21 and degree-seeking, provide leadership, guidance, a helping hand, and act as a positive role model to students who live on their floors. They also lead students by organizing activities, service projects, and educational programs. And the RAs agree they get as much out of the experience as their fellow students. Its a great social opportunity, says David Wefler, an RA at Earhart Hall. Wefler is a junior in elementary education. He sees his RA experience as great preparation for his future. It definitely will help me as a teacher with classroom management. As an RA I have to do numerous things in one day and handle problems on the floor, says the Hobart, Indiana, native. It will help me with prioritizing and time management also all things that will be important in handling a classroom. Aside from long-term rewards, the experience provides immediate gratification as well as practical benefits, says Wefler. One of the best benefits that many students have developed while living with us is self confidence and leadership skills as they have become involved in the student organizations and programming opportunities in the halls. Some have been leaders on their intramural team, others have become leaders on the floor as a hall senator, and yet others have developed the reputation of being a leader in the classroom and have helped classmates understand that tough calculus problem.
