PSE 219 Final Exam December 15, 2005 NAME:_____________________________ PROBLEM 1. (20 points). A bar, with a cross sectional area of 10 cm 2 and a length of 1 m, is chosen as a subcomponent of a structure. The elastic modulus of the material is 1 GPa. It must support a compressive load of 1 kN. The design criteria for the bar are specified as follows: Maximum normal stress < 2 MPa Maximum elongation < 1 mm. a. Draw a picture showing the problem described above. b. Show whether the current design of the bar satisfies or does not satisfy the criteria for the prescribed load of 10 kN. c. Should any other criteria be checked besides the normal stress and elongation? If yes, what would you suggest? d. Let’s say the design does not satisfy the criteria. What could you possible change about the design to meet the criteria?
