Intro In this lab we will be analyzing an unknown sample for composition by weight using an internal standard (ethyl acetate) analytical method on a gas chromatography instrument. The gas chromatography instrument that we used in the experiment is the Shimadzu GC-17A (GC-1). We will be analyzing known solutions of ethanol, 1-propanol and ethyl acetate in order to gain enough data to determine each individual relative response factor ( ki ), according to the ratios of the integrated GC peaks ( Ai ), the relative component masses ( ) Mi , and the following equation: = * AiAr ki MiMr We will then use the individual relative response factors for 1-propanol and ethanol to determine the weight composition of the unknown mixture. Our unknown is number 1-15. Procedure In order to determine the weight composition of an unknown mixture, we first had to determine the retention time for each of the components (ethanol and 1-propanol) and develop a response factor for each of the two compounds relative to the internal standard (ethyl acetate). In order to do this we created different mass ratio solutions of each of the compounds with the standard. These solutions include: Ethanol : 1-Propanol : Ethyl Acetate 3:3:4 0:1:1 1:0:1 1:1:3
