Homework 225C
Fall 2009
Dr. Russell
Part 1: Mean and Uncertainty
(6 pts)
The data set at right shows a set of data points representing measurements of
the electric field at a certain location.
1. Enter this data into an Excel spreadsheet.
2. Calculate the mean (average) value for E (and identify it with a label).
3. Calculate the uncertainty in the mean value of density (and identify it with a label).
The uncertainty in density could be written as
δρ
=
1
N
1
N
E
i
−
E
( )
2
i
N
∑
, where
E
is the mean value.
You can use Excel to calculate the
standard deviation
of the data set (you need
to use the STDEVP function) and then divide the standard deviation by the square root of the number
of samples.
Part 2: Graphing and Data Analysis
(14 pts)
Your coop employer gives you some data representing
measurements of the electric field at various distances from an
unknown charge distribution.
Your boss suspects the source
might be a line charge but wants you to use your graphical skills
