C HEMISTRY 102L R EPORT T EMPLATE EXPT. Synthesis of Benzoic Acid 11 11 Introduction The purpose of this report is to synthesize an acid and to then analyze its purity through different techniques. The objective of the experiment was to synthesize a product by oxidation, purify a substance using recrystallization, and lastly analyze the purity of the substance using melting point and acid-base titration. Materials and Methods A 6.306-g sample of potassium permanganate was added to a 500-mL Erlenmeyer flask. Distilled water (45), 1.0 M sodium hydroxide (3.50 mL, 3.5mmol), and an Aliquat-336 solution (25) were added to the flask, which was gently swirled to mix the reagents and ensure dissolution of the potassium permanganate. Using a graduated cylinder, a 4mL aliquot of benzyl alcohol was added to the reaction mixture. The graduated cylinder was rinsed with 5 mL of distilled water and the rinse water was also added to the flask. The flask was loosely plugged with a rubber stopper and swirled for three minutes. During this time, the mixture warmed considerably as a result of an exothermic reaction. The mixture was swirled occasionally while it cooled to room temperature. The resulting brown solution was filtered with use of a B ü chner funnel and an aspirator. The clear filtrate containing the product of interest was transferred to a 600-mL beaker and the brown manganese (IV) oxide on the filter paper was discarded. Fifteen milliliters of 2 M sulfuric acid was added to the beaker containing the filtrate. While mixing the solution with a stirring rod, additional drops of sulfuric acid were added to the beaker until the solution was approximately pH 2. At this point, white crystals of benzoic acid began to precipitate out of solution.
