Homework due 3/31/09 Name ___________________________________ 1. Describe major effects in the brain of each of the following drugs in the brain. What are some of the common names for these drugs: 1. Opiates 2. Psychostimulants (amphetamine, cocaine) 3. Depressants (alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines) 3. nicotine 4. caffeine 5. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). What do all these drugs have in common that we now believe underlay their potential for abuse. 2. What short-term, transitory changes occur in the brain after a bout of drug use? What are the behavioral consequences? Describe how dopamine, cAMP, CREB, and dynorphin are involved. What does CREB stand for? 3. Describe the lasting changes found in the brains of drug abusers (in the nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area, and anterior cingulate gyrus) and try to explain why each of these changes might be related to the intense cravings and unrealistic expectations that typically accompany long-term abuse and which make it very difficult psychologically for a drug abuser to quit. Do we know if all these changes are “caused” by drug abuse. What is an alternative explanation?

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
