Lecture homework due 10/2/08 Name _____________________________ 1. Explain how fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) works. What is actually being detected with an fMRI scan and a PET scan? In what ways are fMRI scan “better” than PET scans. In what ways are PET scans better? 2. Draw the skull and vertebral column. Label the subdivisions of the vertebral column. Show how far the spinal cord goes down into the vertebral column. What are cranial and spinal nerves. Where do the spinal nerves exit the vertebral column (and how is this different than where they emerge from the spinal cord)? At what levels of the vertebral column does the somatic nervous system emerge? At what levels of the vertebral column does the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic) emerge? 3. What relationship does the Vagus nerve have to the autonomic nervous system? Where does it originate, where does it go? 4. What are the functions of the somatic, sympathetic, and parasympathetic motor systems? What structures do they innervate (or carry sensory information from)?

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
