Do not change them in any way or you get a 0 (zero) to that question. 2. Show all work. 3. If you make an assumption, state it clearly. 4. Provide units with your answers, and box them. 5. Use the back of the equation sheet as scrap paper if needed. 6. The “lb” unit means “lb-force” in this test, NOT “lb-mass” (i.e. do NOT multiply by gravity to get a force!). 7. Deﬁne clearly any new variable you introduce in a problem based on the givens. Pb. I (60 pts) — A structural engineer is trying to design a frame made out of 3 bars, ABD, BEF and DFC, that will support a 100 lb load as shown below. S/he is hesitating between 3 possibilities, cases (a), (b) and (c) as drawn below. The frames are identical except for the following differences: On frame (a), B is a pin and support A is a roller. On frame (b), B is a horizontal slot pin and A is a pin. On frame (0), B is an inclined slot pin along ABD and A is a pin. 1. Draw a complete FBD for the (a) frame as a whole, and then for each of its 3 bars separately. What would change on the FBD of the bar ABD if we had considered instead frames (b) and (c)? (ie, draw a FBD of bar ABD for frames (b) and (c). Clearly indicate the name and direction'of all forces on that bar) What is the angle between ABD and DFC? Apply equilibrium and solve for all unknown forces on frame (a) ONLY. Could you also solve for all unknown forces on frames (b) and (c)?
