Antivirals Despite relatively recent identification of antiviral medications the primary approach to controlling virus is prevention (eg. vaccinations, prophylactic treatment of susceptible people). Antiviral medication development has been slow because viruses use the host’s metabolic machinery – difficult to achieve specificity. Few antivirals developed had high T.I.s.

Influenza Pandemics: Influenza A virus responsible for 1918 pandemic (Spanish flu) and the new strain called swine flu. Also, Asian flu (1957), Hong Kong flu (1968), Russian flu (1977). Different strains of flu (egs. H1N1, H2N2, H3N2) which vary in the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins found on viral coats. Some strains originate in other species (eg. duck for Asian flu). 2009 swine flu is a re-assortment of several strains of H1N1 (one strain endemic in humans, two in pigs and one in birds). Influenza epidemics arise every winter flu season – killing about 35,000 annually in the U.S. Flu vaccines may consist of injected ‘killed’ flu or live attenuated influenza virus (LAIV) Each year the flu mutates, necessitating a new vaccine.
