Personality Chapter 1 26/10/2009 21:38:00 Different people respond differently to similar events.  Goal of personality psych = to find and describe those individual diffs between  ppl that are psychologically meaningful and stable.  Personlality = qualities of individuals that are relatively stable. If person’s  behavior changes from tme to time, then it may not be indicative of personality. But  change can also be meaningful. There could be coherence in the way they changed. Personality – there are stable individual diffs. These diffs reflect an underlying  organization; the complex organization of cognitions, affects, and behaviors that gives  direction and patern (coherence) to the person;s life. Like the body, personality consists  of both structures and processes and reflects both nature (genes) and nurture  (experience). In addition, personality includes the effects of the past, including  memories of the past, as well as constructions of the present and future. Personality Psych’s mission- to account for the individual’s characteristic patterns  of houghts, emotion, behavior together with the psychological mechanisms higgen or  not behind those patterns.It also studes how people’s thoughts and actions interact with  and shape reciprocally the conditions of their lives.  Personality construct (any class of behavior, thoughts, emotion, situation) needs  to 1. Show continuity, stability and coherence, 2. Be expressed in many ways from overt
