October 23, 2009 NOTES TIBETAN BUDDHISM Has Oders o Gelupa order- order of the Dalai Lama The Yellow Hats o Two rival groups: Kargyu (Red Hats) and the Karma-pa (Black Hats) Lamas- religious teachers; here on earth o 1600s-Mongols take over Tibet o Sonam Gyatso- 3 rd Dalai Lama, first major one to lead the people o Bodhisattva who learned from Amitabha Buddha o Tenzin Gyatso- current, 14 th Dalai Lama, head of the Gelugpa Order, Tibetan Buddhism to the world; says he probably will not reincarnate b/c he believes that the people don’t need him to always hold his hand. o 1959- exile from Tibet into Northern India (Dharamasala) MAHAYANA IN CHINA China is already heavily Confucian and Daoist when Buddhism tries to enter Invited to China by Emperor Mingdi under the Han dynasty (turn of bce/ce) China sees the monk/nun stuff to be offensive Takes 1000 years for texts to be translated o Canon is “fixed” around 906- under the Tang dynasty o Yet keeps the 3 category structure of Theravada
