October 16, 2009 Notes Meditation Vipasyana- goal of meditation- the goal is to enhance concentration and sight; focusing on your breathing ( being aware that you are breathing) then maybe focus on your body , then your mind . Meditation for the laypeople have increased because it used to be just monks/nuns who meditated. Mauryan Dynasty- first large Buddhist dynasty Through the 300s, Alexander the Great invaded India King Asoka(273-232)- he sends missionaries; considered a very just king. Wants large pillars with the words of the Buddha on them; makes Buddhism official; everyone gets punished the same *Stupa- grave markers; the original structure a king would be buried under *Theravada Buddhism- oldest form of modern Buddhism “The Way of the Elders”(Poli word) - the more Conservative group, considers themselves the purest group, keep the traditions of the elders Reject all scripture after the Tripitaka; anything after that is not considered a holy text Sri Lanka- first country where it started
