October 19 th , 2009 NOTES Death Rituals (no marriage or birth rituals) o Events on 6 th night and after 3 months- Dana ceremonies o Similar to the Hindu death ritual o People are usually cremated o Prayer, pouring of water, a wake, Architecture Stupa- remains of a holy person or a king (Sanskrit)-> thupa (Pali), caitya (shrine), pagoda 9E. Asia-Sanskirt ‘dagoba’) I main stupa and sometimes smaller ones circling the main one; not every stupa has the Buddha in it; may have a portion of their remains present Temples Stupa Main Temple building( usually rectangular) Vihara- monks/nuns quarters/ where they live Temples really get standardized under Asoka Rectangular shape- 320-540 CE- under the Gupta monarchy Bodhi Tree Dharma hall- for dharma talks given by the monks/nuns May have a library Art No images of the Buddha for the first 500 years; originally thought that a picture would not fully satisfy the Buddha Stone, terra cotta, and wooden images appear after first 500 years
