University of California-Davis Fall 2009 Economics 115B: Macroeconomic Development Homework One  Instructor Teaching Assistants: Wing Thye Woo Gabriel Mathy and David Simon Due in class on October 8th, 2009 (you can also put them in the TA’s mailbox earlier) Part 1)  The following questions should be answered in 1-3 paragraphs each: 1) In lecture 2, we outlined the main factors affecting economic growth.  Using Sachs  chapter 2, explain how these factors were at play in the historical development of Great  Britain.  Are there any extra factors not highlighted in class? 2) Why might import substitution policies (such as imposing a tariff) be beneficial to industry  in developing countries in the long run?  Give examples of countries that have  successfully employed such a policy.  Are there any drawbacks to the policy? Part 2)
