Chris Stanton February 19, 2008 Section 204 – Morris Xu Assignment 2 The first visual I chose is an advertisement for Valvoline motor oil. The ad does an excellent job of mimicking reality because it uses an auto technician (it actually says “Master Auto Technician” on his sleeve) and he is changing the oil underneath a car. However, the ad does not use the major methods for attracting attention such as direct eye contact or a rear view. Instead, the iconic nature of the ad is much more subtle and appeals to those people who understand what the ad is about. It uses an objective camera angle to represent that even the best auto technicians in the world use Valvoline motor oil and if that’s what the technicians use, the everyday person should use it as well. I do not think that this ad would have much of an effect on someone who does not know what motor oil is used for. Even if someone knows what motor oil is, but has never changed their own, would understand that Valvoline motor oil is used by the more technicians that other oils.
