Chris Stanton April 30, 2009 Section 204, Jenn Thom-Santelli Assignment 5 The True Meaning of Pictures The documentary, “The True Meaning of Pictures”, illustrates how photographer Shelby Lee Adams has used his creative and informative picture taking to explain how the people in the Appalachian area of Kentucky live. Being from the area, Adams takes it upon himself to show the rest of the world that the people formerly known as “hillbillies” deserve the respect that the rest of America has denied them for so long. Adams’ photos have created a controversy among his viewers because they see his dramatic photos as exploiting the Appalachians and are actually not of the documentary style like Adams claims. Adams, on the other hand, simply states that he has spent his life with these people and wants to use his talents to showcase their lives to help his viewers better understand this society within America. The two sides of this story have together helped to raise the question, “What is the true meaning of pictures?”
