Chris Stanton 9/25/06 Assignment 4: Movie Analysis Pearl Harbor: An Act of Terror The film Pearl Harbor , released in 2001 by Touchstone Pictures, is a recreation of the epic events that took place on December 7, 1941. The sudden attack of the U.S. naval fleet stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by Japanese forces was the final blow that pushed America into World War II. This movie, directed by Michael Bay, depicts the Japanese as an evil and barbaric enemy whose attack seemed more like an act of terrorism than war. The Americans who survive this attack take part in a mission to enact revenge on Japan, drawing on the idea of the false witness to rationalize their bombing of the heart of Tokyo. Pearl Harbor , which received the Pentagon’s approval, uses the military as a resource to ensure not only historical accuracy but also to make the movie seem as realistic as possible in order to give a backdrop for the romantic love affair between the main characters that takes place. The story of the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese is told through the eyes of two boyhood friends, Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett). The movie begins with Rafe and Danny as pilots stationed under Jimmy Doolittle (Alec Baldwin) in New Jersey. Rafe is the more ambitious of the two and is very excited to get his chance to make a difference in the war. He finally gets his chance when he is asked to fight for the British Royal Air Force and immediately agrees, but is forced to leave behind not only his best friend Danny, but also his girlfriend, Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale).
