727 Chris Stanton October 19, 2007 BIONB 221 Section: Th 10:10 Assignment 4 Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to determine whether or not there is a difference in the number of honey bees, Apis Mellifera , that participate in wing fanning in the brood and honey combs of the hive when heat is applied. I believe that the maintenance of temperature is of greater importance in the brood comb and, since there are usually a larger number of bees in the brood comb, more bees will participate in wing fanning in the brood comb to combat the rising temperature. When compared to the honey comb, which also should experience increased numbers of wing fanners, the brood comb should show a distinctive difference in the number of bees wing fanning over the heating period. Results During the heating period, both combs experienced an increase in the number of wing fanners when compared to non-heating periods. This indicates that the bees were using wing fanning as a mode of thermoregulation. To test whether the differences in the number of wing fanners in each comb were present, the results were plotted for each comb over the 70 minute period, with emphasis on the 35 minute heating period in the middle (Figure 1). The graph supports the hypothesis that the number of bees using wing fanning
