Stephanie Hapner October 13, 2009 BIOL 1107 Lab Avian Influenza versus Standard Influenza Avian influenza is a major source of worries and concern for many scientists and epidemiologists; the majority of this attention stems from the unknown. New flu viruses are very difficult to predict because they mutate often as a result of antigenic shift or antigenic drift. Avian influenza is widespread among poultry and flocks of birds, and can also be transmitted to pigs and horses. It cannot, however, easily infect humans as of yet. There have been case of avian influenza in humans, and they have been studied closely. Scientists learned some valuable information, but not enough to predict what is to come. Many scientists see a possible pandemic in our near future if the avian influenza shifts to be transmissible among humans. Capual and Alexander (202) explained that the new avian influenza (H5N1) to escalate to pandemic-level, a virus host must be ill with both the human and avian strain of influenza. This gives breeding grounds for the virus to mutate and become easily transferrable from human to human (Capual and Alexander, 2002). Loh et al (2008) also agrees that once human-to-human
