Sam’s intro/background 1. What or Who is Conway Cabal a. The Conway Cabal refers to an effort in late 1777 and 1778 to remove George Washington as commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It was named after Brigadier General Thomas Conway, whose letters criticizing Washington were forwarded to the Congress. 2. Main Players a. George Washington b. Thomas Conway c. Horatio Gates 3. Short overview of each “player” in the Conway Cabal incident a. George Washington i. Commander of US congressional Army ii. Failure when he was unable to drive the British out of Philadelphia iii. Didn’t receive credit for the battle at Saratoga (Gates did) iv. Before 1778 the US had very little military success and pressure was on Washington to win an important battle with the British b. Thomas Conway i. French Soldier from Ireland who served as major general ii. Had extensive French military training iii. Volunteered for the US Continental army in 1777 iv. Lead Americans to victory at the Battle of Germantown
