GEOL 240Lxg Notes 10-22-09 Travel-time curves o A travel time curve is a plot of time versus distance for a particular phase. From the recordings made by a large number of stations for many earthquakes, Steps to locating an earthquake focus or epicenter o Measure How travel time curves for P-wave and S-wave phases are constructed PcP – P-Wave reflected off the core PkP – P-wave transmitted One Station Location using Rayleigh waves 5.1 What is direction of first motion of Rayleigh wave o Use ts – tp to find distance d o Look at relative sizes of N-S and E-W components Love – down (away from source), up (toward the source) S – down E – up Size of earthquake o From intensity of shaking based on damage Intensity I-XII using Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale Intensity Map 5.4 o Magnitude Scale based on the amplitude of seismic waves at a specific distance measured using a specific seismograph One magnitude for an earthquake Richter Local Magnitude
