The logistics industry Logistics is the process of optimizing the distribution and information flow of freight along with storage. The logistics industry has become heavily reliant on information technologies in recent years which has improved business and given particular organizations a competitive advantage. The global economy is becoming increasingly dependant on the many stages of the complex industry due to the amount of jobs involved and the large economic influence. (OECD 2002; Coffey D 2006) . The logistics industry is comprised of many operations includeing .Transportation · Forwarding · Customs operations · Warehousing: receiving, receiving inspection, shelving, storage, holding stock, picking, packaging and shipping · Purchasing · Ordering · Payment transactions · Materials management in production · Sales (including receiving orders) · Recycling (MANUNEN 2000) Outsourcing logistics operations is a major part of the industry and there are two major types including third party logistics and fourth party logistics. Third party logistics operators are organizations that work through outsourced activities. This enables a better quality and more adaptable operations. Fourth party operators are providers that are more involved in the supply chain by integrating with complimentary service providers. This allows for a more unified system fro clients(OECD 2002). FACTS AND FIGURES Logistics in Australia Provides 695 000 jobs Almost 2 000 million tones of freight are transported around Australia each year Almost 500 million tones of freight are exported from Australia each year Over 50 million tones of freight are imported each year Almost 1 in 5 employees in the industry hold no qualifications
