SELF-ASSESSMENT AND REFLECTION Self-Assessment and Reflection The four components of conscious capitalism are conscious leadership, higher purpose, stakeholder orientation and conscious culture and can be described as mutually reinforcing (Sisodia, 2011). In the subsequent pages, I will specifically evaluate conscious leadership and compare to other leadership theories. Additionally, I will provide a self-analysis derived from various assessments taken and discuss how the results potentially affect behaviors and leadership approaches. Conscious Leadership and Other Leadership Theories Shafique and Beh (2017) discuss different leadership theories and how they have evolved. The Great Man Theory of leadership was introduced in 1840 by Thomas Carlyle and depicted leaders as heroes from birth that had a certain personality capable of leading (Shafique & Beh, 2017). This view was narrowly analyzed as Carlyle focused mainly on military and political leaders that were forced to lead in their position by commanding others. The Trait Theory of leadership delves more into the attributes of a leader and evaluates five traits of leaders which include experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (Shafique & Beh, 2017). Marinčič and Marič (2018) reference John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market and his famous quote that organizations can only be as conscious as its leader. Conscious leaders are communicative, positive, self-aware, insightful, mindful, and lead for reasons other than fame or power as indicated in the Great Man Theory (Marinčič & Marič, 2018). Marinčič and Marič (2018) illustrate that conscious leaders are role models of the organization that have four key elements including self-awareness, a conscious approach, systemic insight, and collective awareness. 2
