Here are the 5 Part I questions that were answered incorrectly by the most people. The complete set of Part I questions has been posted in Blackboard for your reference. Q14 : The correct answer was E (4 constitutional isomers). The most common incorrect response was C (2 constitutional isomers). In the radical chlorination reaction of an alkane, ALL C-H bonds present in the molecule will react to a significant extent. The 4 constitutional isomers having molecular formula C 5 H 13 Cl that would form in the radical chlorination of 3-methylpentane are shown below: 3-Methylpentane Cl 2 , h ν + HCl Cl Cl + Cl + Cl + Q23 : The correct response was B . The most common incorrect response was A . If a hydride shift or alkyl shift allows a carbocation to rearrange to become an even more stable carbocation, the rearrangement is likely to occur! The major product forms as a result of 2 rearrangements. In the first, an alkyl shift occurs which expands the ring by one carbon atom.
