Boorstin and Van Zudenin Readings - Boorstin takes on the image - He is concerned - He takes on the argument that images are not real - Historically we have considered images as everything but not real - We are lost. We have willingly entered a system that what matters to us are images - Very cynical take on the value of images - Images are synthetic (created to matter, not naturally meaningful), believable (constructed as to be believable), and passive (relationship between producers and consumers is a passive relationship) - Everything you get through the media is a distorition of reality o Ideals have been replaced by images o Events have been replaced by pseudo events Psuedo events- an event that matters, because it is constructed to matter o Heroes have been replaced by celebrities - Issue with visibility, story only significant if you are in the spotlight - There used to be heroes, now they are no longer here - If images are passive, they cannot be cultural - Images are made to be believable and to be well known.
