Exam 3 Review Guide Chapter 8 Eating Disorders and Sleep Disorders Know the symptoms and features of anorexia and bulimia—what do they share in common? In what ways are they different? Know the main criteria for each. Know the mortality rates for anorexia. Know the social/cultural influence that is a primary factor in eating disorders Know binge eating disorder and how it is distinct from bulimia (and how would you distinguish the two?) Remember that bulimics engage in compensatory behaviors which may involve vomiting but can involve fasting/dieting instead. What are the gender differences in eating disorders, and why are the rates so different? Ethnic differences? How would the families of anorexia patients best be described? What are the different treatments (biological, cognitive-behavioral, family) for the eating disorders and how well do they work? Know the difference between the dyssomnias and the parasomnias. Know sleep hygiene and other procedures for preventing/treating insomnia.
