Brian Hults Chemistry 1310/G2 Post Lab 3 Discussion 9/20/09 The first part of this experiment dealt with the different properties of certain solutions with focus on conductivity. We found the molecular formula and weight of various compounds and predicted whether they would be strong or weak electrolytes. Most of the ones that I predicted to be strong electrolytes were the strong acid compounds. With their larger presence of hydrogen ions, it made sense that they would be more conductive. Meanwhile other compounds like distilled water and ethanol lacked these conductive properties so I predicted that they would be weak electrolytes. To my surprise, the salts we measured in this part of the experiment were almost as conductive as the strong acids. I had previously thought that they would be conductive, but I had no clue as to the extent. Otherwise the compounds that I predicted would be strong electrolytes like the acids and salts ended up having the highest conductivity levels and compounds like sucrose, ethanol and distilled water had significantly lower levels of
