Why Work in Teams? At the annual West of England Fat Stock and Poultry Exhibition in the Fall , 1906, scientist Francis Galton asked 800 fair-goers (including butchers, clerks, farmers, housewives, smart and dumb people) to guess what a particular ox would weigh after having been slaughtered and dressed. The correct answer was exactly 1,198 lbs. Galton computed the fair-goers mean estimate and found it was… 1,197 lbs. On the popular television show, “Who wants to be a millionaire?” contestants are allowed to get the advice of a person they know who they consider to be really smart. They are also allowed to ask the audience what it thinks is the accurate answer to a question. The experts offered correct answers 65% of the time. The random crowds of people in the audience were correct 91% of the time

Why Work in Teams? Studies of heart surgeons who practice at more than one hospital found that the death rates from similar procedures varied as a function of the hospital. These statistics suggest that the surgeons’ interactions with anesthesiologists, nurses, and technicians are crucial to the outcome of surgery. The argument has always been that if you want to get something done, get the best surgeon. Our findings suggest that the skills of the team, and organization, matter. WSJ, 11/7/2005

When Not to Use Teams Teams may not be necessary when: one person is an expert and that expertise is all that is needed; when multiple skills, judgments, and experience are not necessary the nature of the issue is one that isn’t aided by teamwork there is not enough time (teams take time) when people are already overworked acceptance by people is not necessary (teamwork tends to build commitment) the nature of task is one where the least successful person determines the highest level of team success teamwork is not valued
