QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTHCARE 2 Thesis Statement: The role of quality improvement in healthcare is beneficial and hold many functions within the organization. Quality improvements in the healthcare enables the industry to maintain patient quality, implement risk management skills to minimize patient safety errors, and effectively control costs. In addition, quality improvements in the healthcare industry enables staff/managers to effectively meet the needs of the economy; as well as promoting positive patient outcomes that drive the healthcare delivery system. Questions/Issues Being Addressed: What is Quality Improvement? What are some drivers for quality improvement in healthcare? Operationally, what are some functions of quality improvement? What are some ways quality improvements effect healthcare? What are some benefits of quality improvement in healthcare? What is some ways communication and risk management improve quality in healthcare? What is S.2446 and what function does it play in quality improvement? I. Quality improvement within the healthcare is an important component in building a successful industry. Quality improvement to denote both a philosophy (the pursuit of continuous performance improvement) and a family of discrete technical and managerial methods (Leatherman, S., et al., 2011). Quality improvements in healthcare will enable much success in patient care, safety, and costs. According to White, M., et al., (2017), there are many drivers for improving quality in healthcare. a. There are pressures associated with growing or increased population. b. The needs of healthcare services have changed. c. There has been an increase in healthcare costs. d. There are also patient safety concerns.

Poor perception and experiences of healthcare from both patients and the media have collectively combined to provide many of the ingredients for a ‘perfect storm’ in healthcare crisis terms (White, M., et al., 2017). II. Quality improvements in healthcare holds many different functions as well. a. Establish and stabilize healthcare delivery systems b. Implement changes and methods to effectively control costs c. Develop innovative tools to meet the healthcare needs to people(society) d. Minimize patient care risks by implementing risk management e. Improve the communication among patients and care givers III. There are many benefits of quality improvements within the healthcare industry. a. Patient costs are reduced b. Healthcare delivery services are improved c. Real-time service waits are improved d. There is improved overall efficiency e. Enhanced safety and effectiveness are achieved IV. Although expectations are high for implemented healthcare quality improvements, there is always a possibility of drawbacks.
