CULTURAL COMPETENCE: THE CASE OF CLAUDIADescribe two social issues related to the course-specific case study for Claudia that informa culturally competent social worker. The main social issues in Claudia’s case includes her legal United States residency versusher parents. Claudia’s parents are undocumented immigrants who traveled from Nicaragua to the United States, later giving birth to Claudia. Due to Claudia’s parents undocumented residency, they struggle economically and live in an impoverished urban neighborhood with a rising crime rate (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen., 2014). Claudia’s father inconsistently struggles to find work in manual labor, while her mother Paula works three nights a week at a local nail salon (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen., 2014). When Claudia’s emotional issues arise, her mother Paula was cautious on locating therapy services for Claudia because of their undocumented status in the country and fear of being deported. Immigrant families living in the United States live in fear because local police implement control measures in everyday spaces of immigrant communities (Hagan, J., Rodriguez, N., & Castro, B. (2011). Immigrants also live in fear of separation from their family members (Hagan, J., Rodriguez, N., & Castro, B. (2011). Therefore, Paula was hesitant at first when locating services for her daughter Claudia. Describe culturally competent strategies you might use to assess the needs of children.Social workers must provide services and represent themselves as competent in their fieldof study (NASW, 2017). In the case of Claudia, her families first primary language is Spanish.
