1 Name: Jordan Bush PTFE 2200 3:05-4:30 Date Experiment Performed: 03/14/2006 Experiment 8: Time Effects- Creep and Relaxation Abstract: In this experiment we are looking at time related mechanical properties: creep and stress relaxation where load and extension are studied. When creep is tested, we look at extension with a constant load. When stress relaxation is tested, we look at a constant extension with a decreasing load. Equipment: Instron Tester Nylon Filament yarn Dead weight Test Parameters: Creep: o 71.25 in. Nylon yarn attached to the ceiling o Attach a dead weight to it and observe for 30 minutes Stress Relaxation: o Use Instron tester and stress yarn to 70% its breaking elongation 8 inch piece of yarn stretched to 9 inches o Hold stretched yarn for 30 minutes

2 Results and Discussion: When creep was observed, the yarn began with a 71.25 inch length and had an instantaneous extension to 74 inch. After thirty minutes, the yarn had stretched to 75 inch. Creep is calculated by taking the total extension and subtracting the instantaneous
